The son of Hungarian immigrant and editor Samuel Rocker, Henry A. Rocker graduated from Cleveland Law School in 1907 and practiced law in the Cleveland area until 1950. He was a founder of the Cleveland City Club, a member of the board of the Cleveland Community Chest, president of Park Synagogue (Anshe Emeth) from 1930-1953, and president of the Jewish Community Council of Cleveland from 1945-1953. Additionally, he served on the board of overseers of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and as a member of the board of directors of the United Jewish Appeal. Family | | | | Dates: | 1791-1993 | | | | Abstract: | The Ford family were prominent lawyers, philanthropists, and businessmen of Cleveland, Ohio, during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The collection consists of genealogies, biographical sketches, correspondence, diaries, journals, account books, appointment books, ledgers, stock certificates, minutes, leases, articles of incorporation, wills, deeds, corporate inventories, maps, newspaper and magazine clippings, tax assessments and returns, diplomas, certificates, military orders, and discharge papers. Material is included on several banking institutions, including Garfield Savings Bank, The Western Reserve Trust Company, Metropolitan National Savings Bank, and the East End Savings and Trust Company. Material on Ford family involvement in the construction and management of the Williamson Building is included, as is family involvement in other real estate enterprises, including The New Amsterdam Company, One Euclid Company, and the Ford McCaslin Company. Involvement in various legal firms by H. Clark, Horatio, and David K. Ford is well documented, as is David K. Ford's role in the organization and operation of the Lubrizol Corporation and Lubrizol Foundation. Family involvement with the Euclid Avenue Congregational Church, and with other philanthropic and social service organizations, such as the American Red Cross, the Maternal Health Association, University Hospitals, and the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University, is documented. Family members were also involved with the Congregational City Missionary Society, the Congregational Home Missionary Society, the Schauffler Missionary Training School (later Schauffler College of Religious and Social Work), and the National Council of the Congregational Churches of the United States. David K. Ford's involvement with Defiance College is documented. David and Elizabeth Brooks Ford's commitment to community service and social reform is well documented in this collection, including correspondence with others sharing their interests, such as Ralph Hayes of the City Club, Dorothy Adams Hamilton Brush with the Maternal Health Association, Agnes Brooks Young with the Cleveland Playhouse, and Katherine Gill Brooks of the Visiting Nurse Association. Of particular interest is the correspondence of H. Clark Ford with the notorious swindler Cassie Chadwick. | | | | Creator: | Band, Jordan C. | | | | Dates: | 1921-2003 | | | | Abstract: | Jordan C. Band (b. 1923) was a prominent Cleveland, Ohio, area lawyer and social activist. Born and raised in the Cleveland area, Band attended Western Reserve University for two years before being drafted into the Army in 1943. Upon his return home from the war in 1946, he married Alice Glickson, with whom he had three children. He finished his schooling in the Law School of Western Reserve University. Band was hired by law firm Ulmer, Berne, Gordon & Glickman (today known as Ulmer & Berne), where he worked until his retirement in 1994. Band concentrated in real estate and property law, and at one point served as the legal counsel for the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland. Band was also involved in numerous organizations, both nationally and in the Cleveland area. Nationally, Band served as chairman of the National Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council from 1967-1970. He was the national vice president of the American Jewish Committee from 1975-1980 and a member of the National Urban Coalition, the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations, the National Conference on Soviet Jewry, the Bureau for Careers in Jewish Service, the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, and the Jewish War Veterans. Locally, Band was deeply involved with the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, serving as chairman of several committees. He was also a member of the Community Relations Board of Cleveland from 1970-1980 and 1983-1990. He was co-chairman of the Greater Cleveland Project, chairman of the Greater Cleveland Conference on Religion and Race, and chairman of the Mayor's Committee on Rewriting of Rules Applicable to Deadly Force by Cleveland Police Officers. Further, he was a member of the Greater Cleveland Roundtable Race Relations Committee, the Study Commission on Race Relations at Cleveland State University, the United Torch Allocations Guidelines Committee, and the Shaker Heights Human Rights Commission. Band was an outspoken advocate for social change and civil rights. He spoke publicly about the plight of Soviet Jewry, the perils of segregation, and the responsibility of Jews as social activists. He was active in the civil rights movement of the 1960s and frequently spoke and wrote about Black-Jewish relations.
